We Just Love Eurovision Too Much was an interval act performance during the second semifinal of the Eurovision Song Contest 2024 in Malmö performed by presenter Petra Mede, singers Charlotte Perrelli and Sarah Dawn Finer (as Lynda Woodruff), written by Edward af Sillén, Daniel Réhn and Mathias Venge. It is essentially a comedic showcase of Sweden's reputation as a Eurovision powerhouse.
The live performance carried references to the 2023 contest, with one of the main topics focusing on Finland, who finished second in that year's contest. This included a mini act which showcased Finnish cultural references, as well as a short performance of Cha Cha Cha by Käärijä.
Background[]
The title "We Just Love Eurovision Too Much" was first teased during Petra Mede's interview with Eurovision fansite Wiwibloggs. The theme of the interval act would cover the notion that, "we Swedes are just too much in love with Eurovision and we apologise for winning all the time".[1]
Lyrics[]
[Petra]
All of Sweden stood up and cheered
When Loreen won in the end
But then I heard some people sneer
Did those bastards win again?
So here we are, once more
Might seem like we've been here before
We've hosted the contest more than most
That's why we must recycle the host
And while we've given the world the pacemaker machine
Spotify and Volvo, and school-striking teens
We're still most proud of
Our schlager queens
[Charlotte]
I'm back!
When the contest calls
I show up every time
And sing the same song since 99
[Petra]
No it's not a déjà vu
[Charlotte]
Yes we're slightly obsessed
[Petra]
But this competition is what we do best
[Petra and Charlotte]
So please don't be angry with us
We just love Eurovision too much
[Charlotte]
You have to understand, this is Sweden
It's cold and dark
We were desperate for an effort to ignite a spark
[Petra]
So the contest gave us the idea
To show you all we're more than depression and Ikea
[Charlotte]
In Spain they got flamenco
[Petra]
In France they got the brie
[Charlotte]
But if you Google Sweden
This is what you'll see
[Petra]
Greece has got honey
Norway's got money
Denmark has... well... something
But in Sweden we teach our kids in school
More than history and sports
They learn that the Eurovision is cool
And non-political of course
[Charlotte]
That writing songs is the ultimate success
If not for Sweden
Then try your luck for Cyprus
[Petra and Charlotte]
So please don't be angry with us
We just love Eurovision too much
[Lynda]
Hello Eurovision
I'm from the EBU
With just one mission
To check the votes from you
'bout Sweden's domination there is nothing we can do
Cause they keep writing songs that stick like a tattoo
Loreen won by a margin
And got the votes again
Just like she did in
Azerjaban...
So please don't be angry and make a fuss
They just love Eurovision too much
[Petra and Charlotte]
We can hear your complaints
We can feel your fury
When they close the vote and we meet the jury
Please don't be angry with us
They just love Swedish music too much
[Charlotte]
Last year the one who almost gotcha
Was a green and loony Finn
[Petra]
Who threatened us with Cha Cha Cha Cha
And almost took the win
[Charlotte]
You would all have loved to pack for a Helsinki trip
[Petra and Charlotte]
Where the interval act would have looked like this...
[A mini act comprising of Moomins and a dance group with Ievan polkka, followed by Cha Cha Cha]
[Petra]
But do you know what, guys?
I'm afraid that didn't happen
[Petra, Charlotte and Lynda]
So you can boo all you want
We're not sorry we won
For a Swede this is oxygen and lifeblood in one
It's just a game for other nations
For us it's medication
[Lynda]
They need this like a grandma needs her drum
[Petra, Charlotte and Lynda]
But we shall go from 12 points to ten
So we promise we won't win again
[Petra]
Well, maybe just one more time so we can beat Ireland
[Petra, Charlotte and Lynda]
So please don't be mean
We won't keep sending Loreen
We hear your complaints and agree
So please don't be angry with us
We beg you please don't be angry with us
We just love Eurovision too much
[Lynda]
No they really do
Trivia[]
- The Finnish "interval act" consists of dancers dressed in traditional Finnish clothing, or wrapped in towels while carrying vihta (a bath broom commonly used in saunas), as well as Moomin mascots. The act is accompanied with the song Ievan polkka.
