Ruth Jacott is a singer born in Suriname, and at just nine years old, moved with her family to the Netherlands where she took part in various contests in The Netherlands and Belgium. She was also a member of some bands, such as The Vips. She represented The Netherlands at the 1993 contest with Vrede.

In 1990, she sang a duet with Hans Vermeulen, the song being "Tegyo Makandra", in commemoration of a plane crash in her home town, Paramaribo, in Suriname. The duet also became a hit after the crash of El Al Flight 1862 in 1992.

Eurovision

In 1993, she won the Dutch selection for the Eurovision Song Contest 1993 in Millstreet, Ireland, and the selected song, Vrede, was one of the favorites to win the contest. She performed 20th on the night, and after the voting finished in 6th place.

After Eurovision

In 2000, she had her vocal cords operated on, and after she healed, Jacott toured theatres again and released many singles and album with varied successes in the Netherlands. She also had her own Christmas show in 2008.

She was one of the five jurors for the Netherlands in the 2014 contest in Copenhagen.

She voiced the character of Abuela Alma Madrigal in the Dutch dub of the Disney film Encanto.
