Mary Hopkin is a Welsh singer. She first came to the British public's attention when she won ITV talent show "Opportunity Knocks" and was recommended by model Twiggy to Paul McCartney, who signed her to The Beatles' Apple record label.
Her debut single was released in 1968, becoming a #1 hit in the UK and reaching #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the US. It went on to sell 1.5 million copies in the US and was awarded a gold disc. In February 1969, she released her debut album and it was her only success on the UK charts, where it peaked at #3 and in the US it peaked at #28.
She was chosen to represent the United Kingdom in the 1970 Contest in Amsterdam but in spite of being the pre-Contest favourite she finished as runner-up to Ireland's Dana. The single reached #2 on the UK charts.
To date, she has released 13 studio albums and continues to tour throughout the UK.
