Jean-Marc Monnerville, better known through his stage name Kali, is a French singer from Martinique known for his work on modern Zouk music, as well as his critical lyrics on imperialism, slavery, and militarism.

Jean-Marc's parents encouraged him to study classical percussion, with his father sending him away to France in the 1970s to study musical composition and theory. His stage name, Kali, came from a cartoon character known in is youth. Afterward, Kali started his first group, Gaoule, which was named for a 17th century slave massacre.

However, it is with his second group, 6ème Continent, where he developed his signature style and garnered success. They rose to national prominence when they stepped in to replace the Nigerian singer Femi Kuti at the "Fète de la Musique." in June 1983. Despite their rising profile, Kali split up the group when studios wanted them to change their sound.

Returning back home, Kali began his solo career, focusing on traditional music in the West Indies. His first two solo albums, "Racines I" (1989) and "Racines II" (1990), show this reflection through combinations of banjo and synthesizer. After a performance in France, he was selected to be the French representative at the Eurovision Song Contest 1992 with the song Monté la riviè. It nodded to Haitian musical tradition while adding synthesizers, as well as being the only song to feature Haitian Creole. It ended up finishing eighth with 73 points, yet Kali got a career boost, with his next album "Lese la Te Tounen" (Let the Earth Move) getting more commercial success and "Pan Patchew" being named the best song in 1994.
