For vår jord (translation: For our earth) was the Norwegian entry at the Eurovision Song Contest 1988 in Dublin performed by Karoline Krüger.
The song is an environmentally-themed ballad, with Krüger describing a woman who is "standing guard for our earth". The character is described as being something of an outcast due to her beliefs, however the lyrics suggest that the woman's realisation of the need to protect the earth is something which should be shared more broadly.
It was performed fifteenth on the night following Greece and preceding Belgium. At the close of voting, it finished in 5th place with 88 points.
Lyrics[]
Ingen vet hvem hun er
Ingen våger å gå for nær
Der hun står med høye rop
Og store øyne som aldri møter våre
Hun ser inn i glemte land
Man tror hun mangler forstand
Hun er en av de som våker ved flammen (For vår jord)
En av de som holder grenene sammen (For vår jord)
Hun ser at jorden er vår mor
Stå vakt for vår jord
Hun ser at jorden er vår mor
(Stå vakt) Og la flammen få brenne
(Stå vakt) Samme hva som vil hende
(Stå vakt) Stå vakt for vår jord
No one knows who she is
No one dares to go too close
Where she stands with loud cries
And large eyes that never meet ours
She looks into forgotten lands
People believe she has lost her mind
She is among those guarding the flame (For our earth)
One of those keeping the branches together (For our earth)
She sees that the earth is our mother
Stand guard for our earth
Everyone looks in another direction
The chattering dies out, we exchange glances and smile
Her screams are without skin
She carries a message from the earth
She is among those guarding the flame (For our earth)
One of those keeping the branches together (For our earth)
She is among those struggling in the current (For our earth)
One of those who never wake from the dream (For our earth)
She sees that the earth is our mother
(Stand guard) And let the flame burn
(Stand guard) No matter what happens
(Stand guard) Stand guard for our earth
Trivia[]
- Along with Anita Skorgan composing the song, one of the backing vocalists was Tor Endresen, who would later represent the country at the Eurovision Song Contest 1997, also in Dublin.
