Enrico Ruggeri is an Italian singer-songwriter.
After a number of groups in the early 1970s, he formed the punk group Decibel in 1977. Their debut album, released in 1978, proved to be a commercial failure. However, they found success with the song "Contessa", which made it to the final of the Sanremo Music Festival in 1980. This helped with the sales of their second album.
Enrico began his solo career in 1981; his debut album, Molotov Champagne, faced trouble when questions came up from his previous record label which had the original rights. Simultaneously, he taught as a substitute teacher and wrote songs for other Italian artists. He made is breakthrough with the album Polvere and its title track. He released a number of albums throughout this period, increasing with sales each time. While he drifted from his rock roots at times, he returned to them in the 1990s, with his most popular album, Peter Pan, being released in 1991. In addition, he managed to win Sanremo twice, in 1987 with Si può dare di più" ("You can give more") together with Gianni Morandi and Umberto Tozzi and in 1993 singing "Mistero" ("Mystery").
Despite that victory, RAI was against sending Mistero to represent Italy at the Eurovision Song Contest 1993 in Millstreet; instead, he sang Sole d'Europa, which placed 12th. RAI would later withdraw from the contest until 1997.
He has continued to release albums as a solo artist, as well as coming fourth in Sanremo in 2016 with the song "Il primo amore non si scorda mai". Recently, he reunited with his band, Decibel, in 2017, releasing their first work in almost forty years. They also participated at the Sanremo festival in 2018.
