Croatia made its debut as an independent country in 1993 following the breakup of the former Yugoslavia. They came in the top ten six times since then, and after 2000, the Croatian entries kept slipping down and eventually failing to place in the final in 2007. They were one of only three countries to never have been relegated, the other two being Sweden and Malta.
The country had a 33% point reduction penalty in 1999 by the EBU when Doris used voices in the backing track of Marija Magdalena, which is against the rules as all singers have to be present on stage singing. The penalty was only applied for the purpose of calculating the average for relegation, the country's standing remained unaffected.
Croatia returned for the 2016 contest in Stockholm after a 3-year absence along with Bulgaria.
Its best ever result was achieved in 2024, where Baby Lasagna represented the country with the song Rim Tim Tagi Dim, scoring 2nd place in the final. He was not even shortlisted in their national final, but used as a backup entry in case someone withdrew.
