A commentator is a representative of each participating broadcaster at the Eurovision Song Contest and as such part of their respective country's delegation. Their job is to narrate the action during each of the live shows, provide information about the songs and artists as well as provide reaction to results. Each broadcaster is given their own commentary booth at the back of the arena (at the 2019 contest, the booths were located on the stage right side of the venue).
Countries that have multiple broadcasters catering to a specific language such as Belgium and Switzerland send a separate commentary team for each broadcaster to reach their own language-centric audiences.
Usually, commentators are well-known media personalities in their home countries, but sometimes they can be joined by former contest participants due to their first-hand experiences.
Depending on the broadcaster, a different set of commentators can be used for the semifinals and the final, or the same commentators can be used through all three shows. They can perform the job solo, or be joined by one or two others.
Commentators can also act as spokespersons or even presenters. Since 2010, the commentators also vote on the Artistic Award for the Marcel Bezençon Awards.
