Baccara is a Spanish pop-disco duo made up of teacher Mayte Mateo and dancer Maria Mendiola. Formed in 1977, they are best known for the international hits "Yes Sir, I Can Boogie" and "Sorry I'm A Lady".
They were chosen to represent Luxembourg at the Eurovision Song Contest 1978 in Paris with the song Parlez-vous français?. One of the favorites and one of the best-known acts in the contest, many thought that the song was too similar to their previous hits and the duo finished 7th overall. Nonetheless, it became another big hit across Europe.
With the disco era at its end, the duo split in 1981 but still toured as two separate groups with the same name, each led by a founding member.
Mendiola passed away on 11 September 2021 at the age of 69, thus ending her version of Baccara with singing partner Marisa Pérez. Mateo still performs in her version of Baccara to this day with her partner Paloma Blanco.[1]
